A History of Pecan Grove Church
A Church of Christ

Pecan Grove Church began on November 7, 1977, as the Greenville South Church of Christ. Thirty-seven were in attendance at the first meeting in the Bethel Community Center in Greenville, Texas, with 22 being identified as charter members.

In July 1978, the congregation moved its meeting place to the Greenville Junior High Cafeteria, where it remained for over two years. In November 1978 the congregation changed its name to the Pecan Grove Church of Christ.

On September 3, 1980, the congregation moved into their new building at the corner of FM 1570 and Dent Road. Much of the building was constructed by the members, and a member-constructed education wing was added in 1984.

During this period the men of the congregation, both young and old, provided lessons from the pulpit and served as fill-in speakers at other small area congregations, a practice which continues today.

In October 1981, Mike McAlister became the first pulpit minister and served effectively until moving to Friendswood, TX. in January, 1989. Following Mike's departure, the men and guest speakers again filled the pulpit until January 1991, when Charles Turner came to the church as a part-time teacher/pulpit minister. Charles served in this capacity several months.

In February 1980, Pecan Grove installed Glenn Murphy and Weaver Barnett as the congregation's first Elders. Since then the following men have served as Elder at Pecan Grove: Jerry Morgan, Dick Smith, Jim Morris, Charles Turner, John Banister, Roger England, Paul Graves, and Richard Johnson. Glenn Murphy, John Banister Paul Graves, and Richard Johnson are currently serving.

Over the years, Pecan Grove members have been involved in campaign efforts at Campbell, TX; Quinlan, TX; and Cashatta, LA. They have provided missionary support to South Africa, the Philippines, Switzerland, France, Kenya, Italy, Ecuador, Papua New Guinea, Germany, and Australia.

They have also been active involved in such family ministries as Marriage Encounter, Adventures in Christian Living, Learning To Love, Abundant Living Seminar, The Seasons of Life Seminar. Members have also been active in Promise Keepers and the annual Stream in the Desert revival in Midland, TX.
